A surgical suture kit is an essential tool for medical students. It provides them with a set of required tools to perform basic surgical incisions and suturing for practice. It is also used by college students for their general dissection practicals.

Surgical suture kits are available on the market for both professionals and medical students in different price ranges. They can be of three kinds:

1. Surgical Suture Practice Kit:

A general suture practice kit consists of the following items:

  • Suture Practice Pad: For suturing practice, a practice pad made up of premium silicon or animal skin is present inside the kit with instructions to make incisions and stitches at particular angles. The advantage of premium silicon is that it is a flexible material and can be used again and again.
  • Needle Holder: Three types of needle holders are commonly found inside a suture kit: Mayo- Hegar Needle Holders, Mathieu Needle Holders, and Crile-Wood Needle Holders. The most important of them is the Mayo-Hegar needle holder. A needle holder is a surgical instrument that is used to hold suture needles during the suturing process. It consists of a handle, shaft, and tip. Sometimes, the handle has a lock mechanism for a better grip. Normally, the size range is 5 to 6 inches.
  • Forceps: One or two sets of forceps are also present inside the kit. Adson, mosquito, and Kelly forceps are the most common. A forceps is also used to grasp and hold tissues during surgical procedures. It has fingerings for a secure grip. Its tips may be blunt, curved, straight, or pointed. It is normally in the size range of 5 to 6 inches.
  • Scissors: Stitch scissors and iris scissors are generally present within the kit. Usually in sizes of 4 to 5 inches. These scissors are used to cut or trim the sutures and also for removing sutures. Iris scissors are thin and straight, and their tips are sharp and curved, while stitch scissors have a small tip with a sharp blade.
  • Scalpel Handle: It has only two parts: a handle and a blade. The blades are replaceable. It is used to make small incisions in the skin and tissues. A scalpel of size #3 is preferred for a suture kit. It is normally 5 to 5.5 inches long.
  • Suture Training Book: Inside a surgical suture training book, complete guidance about using the instruments is present. You can see the following type of information inside the book:
  1. Basic Principles.

  2. Anatomy of the Skin.

  3. Suturing Equipment.

  4. Basic and advanced suturing techniques

  5. Post-Suturing Care.
